Old Town, San Diego

On a bright and sunny Saturday morning, we went to San Diego's Old Town with David, Jessica, Devin, and Gabriella. This is the birthplace of the city of San Diego. The Spanish founded a settlement here in 1769 and it was then ceded to the United States in 1850. It was great fun watching the grandkids exploring everything with wide-eyed wonder. We had a wonderful time.

The Streets of San Francisco

San Francisco is a great place for tourists because there is just so much to see. We had a fantastic time walking all over and exploring what the city had to offer (even though some of the hills were a "killer" to climb - we are still trying to catch our breath). From Chinatown, to Fisherman's Wharf, to Alcatraz island, to the Golden Gate Bridge, there was not much that we didn't visit. On the day we went to the Golden Gate Bridge, our walk totaled 16 miles round trip (as logged by the Dashboard Health app on our phone).

While trying to catch our breath after climbing one of those "killer" hills, we had this spectacular view of the Bay Bridge...

...and of Alcatraz island (if you look closely at the bottom of the photo you can catch a glimpse of the steepness of the hills).

Along the waterfront is the famous Boudin Sourdough factory and restaurant....

...where their signature baked items are in the shape of different animals.

Fisherman's Wharf was full of very interesting shops and restaurants.

During one of our sojourns along Fisherman's Wharf, we came across this high school film crew (consisting of Albe, Darya, Romteen, Amanda, and Nina) interviewing folks about what happiness is. Of course we participated in their school project.

And for our grandson, Eamon, we just had to stop into Houdini's Magic shop.

What a lovely little park we found up on Russian Hill (the Fay Garden Park).

Along the way to the Golden Gate Bridge, we passed Crissy Field, which was an active biplane airfield during the 1920's.

We finally made it to the Golden Gate Bridge. We walked from our hotel in Union Square to the bridge. We then walked the full length of the bridge, over to Sausalito and back, before returning to our hotel. This was a full16 mile round trip walk, but it was worth it.
