As late as the 1970’s, the rope bridge still had only one handrail and large gaps between its slats. In 2000, with the help of mountain climbers and abseilierrs (rappellers), a new bridge, tested to to hold ten tons of weight, was built. While on Carrickarede Island, if the weather is clear enough, you can see Scotland across the waters.
Today, as a mostly tourist site, it is owned by the National Trust and sees nearly 500,000 visitors per year. While the bridge itself was never feature in the “Game of Thrones”, one of its parking lots was used for scenes depicting Renly Baratheon’s War Camp.
